Free Sensory Room - La Retama Library - Corpus Christi, TX

I was standing in line at La Retama Library, when I saw a pamphlet for a SENSORY ROOM. I was like, “I know this can’t be what I think it is!” As a mom with a child possibly on the spectrum and with notable sensory issues, I lit up inside. Turns out… It was even better than I imagined.

La Retama Library has a FREE, private sensory room to rent out for your littles who could benefit from it! You can rent it out for an hour at a time and only the people on the reservation are allowed in the space at that time (such a sacred space! You have so much more freedom and so much less stress and anxiety when you do not have to police your child around others). You can make a reservation over the phone or at the front desk at the library. Your first visit, arrive about 10 minutes early to do an orientation to learn about the room and its capabilities.

When we first opened the door, my usually nonverbal son said “WOW!!!!!!” and went right in. You can choose to have the lights dim, like we did, or on with several levels of brightness. The room is filled with things to excite, teach, calm and regulate your littles. There is signage above each activity that teaches you how to use it and how it benefits kids with sensory issues. It was a beautiful hour in the room and my son didn’t even want to leave.

I am originally born and raised in Houston, TX. However, when it came to finding resources, testing and sacred spaces for my son…. it was extremely difficult in the major city. Here, I have been finding so many gems that have turned out to be exactly what he needs. I will be sharing more over the coming weeks!

Figuring out what to do, where to turn, and how to help your child that either has a speech delay, autism, or any sensory issues can be a nightmare… but Corpus Christi has proven to be a sort of safe haven for this! Stay tuned for the other gems!
